OpenVPN protocol vs L2TP

Recently, I was looking at and comparing different protocols. Protocols are the different ways a VPN transfers data across its network. As such, each different protocol, have a different way in which it processes information (for example, they have different methods of encryption and authentication). Obviously, with different ways of processing the data, there are several advantages and disadvantages. As such, today I will compare two different protocols :. OpenVPN protocol and protocol layer 2 tunneling

Protocol OpenVPN

OpenVPN is free, open source VPN available for download. It has its own custom protocol known as OpenVPN protocol. Just because something is open source does not mean it is not good - and this is certainly true of the OpenVPN protocol. He is so good in fact, many paid for VPN services use this protocol. It is essentially a custom blend of Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocols. It is an excellent protocol because it gives you great security, and what's more it allows you to bypass many firewall and other barriers to Internet. However, the only issue you might have with this protocol is that it requires a bit of technical configuration. So if you are a bit of a technophobe, so maybe it is not for you.

Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol

The Layer 2 Tunnelling (L2TP) is often used in tandem with the IPSec protocol, which is used to create a more secure connection and transfer of data across the VPN. L2TP treats encrypted data in an interesting way, where the client and server exchange certificates or pre-agreed key. If these match, the customer is shown to be authentic, and the data is transferred and / or unencrypted. Again, this is a great protocol, and is very secure, but the downside is that it can take a bit of technical know-how to get its full benefits.

As I mentioned before, there is no need to be cared far good protocols because you do not think you'll be able to configure them. There are a lot of good VPN providers who will support you in doing this. HideMyAss is such a VPN. For more information, click the button below:
