Is this your phone infect you? -

smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices have become very popular in recent years. It is reported that two in every three new phones purchased are now smartphones, which means more people than ever are connecting remotely via the Internet on small screens enough to fit in the palm of their hands.

We now live in a world where everything - communication, research, work - is on the move; We're wired up, registered and logged in, no matter where we are. However, despite the obvious benefits such as technology permits, the ubiquitous nature of wireless Internet also brings with it security issues.

Smartphones and tablets are vulnerable because people forget they are mini-computers. During the installation of anti-virus software on a PC is second nature to most people, many of us happily download and click unrecognized links on our phones and tablets without ever consider the possibility that we could upload malware that could steal our personal data.

Indeed, the Android system is thought to be particularly vulnerable to malware because of its popularity and open nature, but any mobile device can be risky. And because smartphones inevitably encourage the use of insecure networks, unsuspecting people really do not give fraudsters and cybercriminals the opportunity to exploit their casual surfing on the road.

However, there are some simple steps you can take to improve security and Internet security of your mobile in general. These include:

  • Get anti-virus software. There are many options to choose from, regardless of the platform used by your device.
  • Be careful about where and how you connect to the Internet. Using a VPN (or Virtual Private Network) can help protect you by keeping you anonymous online. A virtual private network is particularly useful when connecting over public networks.
  • Password protect your device and you sure that you use different passwords for all your online accounts.
  • Being careful what you click on. If you receive a text message or email with an unknown link, do not click on it.

Although it may not have had with you before, it is important to remember that your safety on the Internet is as important when using a mobile device as it is with a PC. Make sure you stay safe when you're out and about.
