Anonymity for website owners is attacked -

Icann, the company that helps control the infrastructure of the Internet called for plans to end the anonymity of website owner. In a move that has provoked strong opposition, the movement hopes ICANN will result in greater transparency as regards those who publish websites. At present, anyone who registers a domain name must provide contact details, but it can be protected by the domain servers that can keep this information private. Anonymity for website owners is attacked, and an advocate of online privacy has called for a reversal of the decision.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation has opposed these plans, saying it will further the potential for fraud and identity harassment on any person who has a domain name. For registration of domain names simply submit their personal data and the domain server simply by submitting their own information in Whois, the directory for all Web site addresses. But ICANN hopes to end this practice, the movement is also supported by the US entertainment industry via the Coalition for Online Accountability. In a statement in May, Steve Metalitz Congress confronted with what he believes is unethical, that millions of domain registrations are hiding in the shadows of public knowledge, free of governance.

Everyone who opposed the move was emailing their protest to ICANN in the hope that the body will change their position. As they believe that no matter what web site you have, whether personal or commercial, that your privacy will remain safe and secure.
