Five years of Cookie law: good intentions and incompetence of politicians create security, privacy nightmare -

Five years with the "cookie law" taking effect in 2011, shows how the good intentions of politicians - when combined with incompetence - can create a security nightmare privacy. It was supposed to give users the choice, privacy and security. Its effect beyond causing facedesks developers and headache, was exactly the opposite.

in . 09 the European Parliament adopted a revised directive on privacy and electronic communications 09 the main new thing in the amendment of these rules was something called "consent for cookies." - Demanding that all users to accept cookies are stored on their computers all sites

It is important to remember that this legislative directive - the European equivalent of a federal law - was voted by the people who get their print e-mail to them by the secretaries, and therefore believe they understand what this thing is about Interwebs. No seriously. That's actually what the European Parliament still looks and certainly looked like two terms ago (early 09)

The general idea is that users must give their consent for tracking cookies to be placed on their computers -. General, to consent to be monitored. But the nature of websites by 09 had already happened by using cookies to track only; Cookies are used for all of the interaction with the user, authentication preferences. Even something as simple as a WordPress blog up cookies on the browser of visitors (although most blog administrators disable it for performance reasons).

In all cases, requiring opt-in for this in the site interface , as opposed to in the browser options, created a nightmare for privacy and security that will take decades to undo. This is what happens when good intentions meet technical incompetence.

The only net effect of the cookie law is that each user has been conditioned to click "Yes, I agree" on a popup that appears when they go to a new website .

As these cookie consent dialogs take very different forms, the average user will not be able to tell a "Allow cookies? Yes / No "dialog box from an" install malware? Yes / no "one. So, political incompetence has created a nightmare for privacy for the masses.

Privacy remains your own responsibility.
