- Twelve teams participate in each event .. : ten qualified, both by invitation.
- Japan is still pre-qualified because it is the host country.
- Five continental champions qualified, plus the four best Continental vice-champions as ranked by the FIVB.

- Since the 1999 edition, the only teams not yet qualified for the next Olympic Games can compete in the World Cup .
- the competition is divided into exactly two phases (called "legs").
- teams are divided into two pools.
- in the first stage, each team plays one match against all other teams in its pool.
- in the second stage, each team plays one match against all the teams from the other pool.
