Vint Cerf imagine a self-archiving internet - which could lead to a more open future -

What would an auto archiving internet look like? At the recent Decentralized Web Summit hosted by the Internet Archive, Vint Cerf, one of the computer scientists hailed as a founding father of the Internet, gave a thought provoking conference on the future of the Internet. At an event where high-level talks was the norm, Vint Cerf shared his thoughts on a relatively basic concept with an understandable goal - to preserve the knowledge of the world. The Internet is the focal point of all the knowledge of mankind, and soon it will be the focal point of the whole activity of mankind.

The historical progress of technology has not been as good for all participants. While some Internet companies have been around for more than a decade, many others have fallen into obscurity in this period too. The record of the Internet many first activities has since been erased from the collective memory of the world (sometimes used to describe the Internet term). It's not just the websites of companies which disappeared failed, however. Many research data, paid for by taxpayers' money, is in data formats that are easily readable by modern equipment. Backward compatibility is not something that is guaranteed by companies because it is not something that has been cooked in infrastructure to make it go. Vint Cerf lamented.

"This issue of backward compatibility I think is actually quite serious, especially if you think of archiving things and keep them for very long periods of time by decades of. centuries. "

Some believe that the Internet is not as open as it used to be. According to Cerf, things were very open at first. He said that "people worked together towards a common goal," and hope we can do the same again. In addition to recent calls for a self archiving Internet, Cerf also raised its ideal internet as Internet-centered people.

The Internet self-archiving of the future

How open can be open, though? Cerf also had some thoughts on the following:.

"We will probably not succeed in creating an environment where nothing is ever protected or where there are no constraints on anything I could not accept the idea that people will generate content they report having these properties. I could also easily imagine the parties that will say I do not want to make them freely open, I want access control, I want control of replication or distribution. I think that's ok. We must be able to do this archive idea circulated in a large sense of the tent. Allow all these cases be handled in the same way that the business models of the Internet were open and non-binding. "

Some questions the entire industry still need to address were also mentioned by Cerf. licensing issues arise, particularly when companies disappear. Even if we are able to store everything that has ever existed, we can legally do this? Furthermore, if we save everything, so we save malware? Cerf admitted: ". How can we make an open and safe environment for everyone to use is still an open question"

Although, at this point, other questions remain than answers the fact that the creators of the Internet as we know are pushing for change means that we should all pay attention.
