DD-WRT (operating system)

firmware based on Linux-

DD-WRT is for wireless routers. DD-WRT is a popular alternative firmware for users who wish to upgrade their routers.

DNS (Domain Name System)

This is not a VPN glossary if we failed to mention DNS (Domain Name System). DNS records your brain to explode! How? Well, without that, you have to remember the IP address of each site you want to visit, instead of just the site or the domain name. Instead of simply remember "google.com" you would have to type 173 194 112 231. It is like an address book, so instead of having to remember the mobile number of your friend, you just need to remember their names. Ok, some people out there can actually choose to work this way, but for those of us who are bad with numbers, remember domain names is a much better and easier option!

So the next time you enter a domain name, think of the computer attempting to connect to the server. The computer does not know what he wants, he is lost and does not understand "Facebook.com", until it reaches to the powerful DNS server that is the correct IP address for "Facebook.com "Phew!

Encryption

This is a process of encoding data to turn it into unintelligible code that prevents attackers and eavesdroppers to be able to decipher the but the recipient can read again. For example, if you use HMA! Pro VPN on your Android or iOS device while using Wi-Fi, all your personal information is safe, thieves, hackers or other third parties will not be able to get their sticky fingers on it!

HMA! Control Panel

In the HMA! Control Panel you will find your HMA! account with information relating to our VPN service and personal settings. In the control panel, you'll be able to see when your HMA! subscription expires, and you will also be able to download our software to your device from here.

HMA! Load balancing

The bus is late (again) and a large crowd of people gathered around waiting for the next. As is often the case with public transport, both running at the same time. Passengers are scrambling to board the first bus, but is now at full capacity, and they are invited to jump on the second. Passengers are divided between the two buses, so no single bus is overwhelmed.

Load balancing allows you to switch to a less busy server VPN, if the VPN server you connect to is heavily overloaded. Traffic and processing are distributed evenly across a network, providing faster speeds.

ICS (Internet Connection Sharing)

ICS lets you connect to the Internet using another computer's connection. HMA! ICS takes charge and lets you use the VPN via another device. For example, you can connect your Xbox to your computer and watch your favorite video streams simultaneously

Check how you can configure ICS :.

    • Internet ICS Connection Sharing in Windows
    • ICS Internet Connection Sharing in Windows XP
    • Configuration Playstation 3 to use VPN via ICS

IP address

I will include an explanation for an IP VPN in our glossary as I recently spoke someone who does not know what it is.

The "IP" bit means "Internet Protocol". An IP address is your "internet home address." It is assigned by your ISP (Internet Service Provider), and each time you use the Internet, you reveal your location based on your IP address.

But when you use a HMA! Pro VPN server you are assigned one of our IP , so that you become anonymous and have the freedom to surf the net away from prying eyes.

IP Binding

Secure IP Binding allows you to force the selected applications on your computer to work when connected to our VPN servers. This ensures the selected applications only work behind a secure encrypted connection. If you open the selected applications without being connected to our VPN, you will not be able to access the Internet. How to start using the IP connection !

ISP (Internet Service Provider)

This means "ISP" and without it, well, you can not connect to the Internet. it is the company you pay a monthly fee for (probably one of the few bills do not mind paying!) in order to use the Internet.

Identity in online

We would not favorite VPN provider in the world if we do not explain what "online identity" is in our glossary VPN

Your online identity is other computer can know more about you !; it starts with things like screen resolution, browser used, the user name ... and ends with things like where you live, your service provider Internet access and perhaps even the town you live in. There are several ways someone can find it for you, but there also many ways to hide this information.

What can I do to hide this information?

The best way to hide data and protect your online identity and privacy is to use HMA! Pro VPN. It is safer, faster and more reliable than any proxy service, and full compatibility with all types of Internet applications. Websites that are followed, you fail to fulfill their mission, simply because they can see the VPN, not you

Ping

Another term I am sure you have heard, and should be explained in our VPN glossary is Ping.

There can be half of "Ping-Pong" (a game that originated in England during the 1880s) and a minor fictional character in Seinfeld, but "Ping" also has a related computer senses . Basically, a side sent a ball (ping) of the other side (ping) that returns it. You run a ping test to check if the computer is connected to a network. Running this test will determine the time between multiple computers so that data transfer paths can be rerouted in a more efficient manner.

PPTP / L2TP Password

Your PPTP / L2TP password is different from your password. It is a password used for all types of PPTP and L2TP manual connections, unlike your password, which is used for manual connections OpenVPN.

The PPTP / L2TP password can be found by logging on VPN control panel and clicking on "Software & Support". When you click on "View" next to "Manually set-up VPN - No software.", You will see your PPTP / L2TP password

Types Protocol

There are many protocols for managing Internet connections and HMA! supports the most popular 3.

  • OpenVPN is a private network (VPN) virtual product open source, available for all platforms and key features, which works via TCP or UDP (UDP is usually faster! Our client HMA defaults, see "Auto-path"). It is the protocol of choice for maximum security. To connect to a VPN server via the OpenVPN protocol, additional software ( "VPN software" - scroll VPN glossary for information) must be installed
  • PPTP -. Means "-to-Point Tunneling Protocol Point." PPTP protocol is fast, however, it is lower in terms of safety and other alternative protocols. It works with TCP and is widely supported, with the advantage that no additional software needs to be installed to connect to a VPN server using. In webconfiguration your router, you might have seen a parameter called This should be enabled to prevent connection problems when using PPTP
  • L2TP "PPTP passthrough." -. Means ". Protocol 2 Tunneling Layer" She alone does not provide encryption or privacy, which is why it is used along the protocol "IPSec" This makes it a secure and robust protocol. - It works via UDP and requires any software to use it too, most devices and operating systems have built. Similar to PPTP, many routers have a setting called "L2TP and IPSec passthrough," which must be enabled to prevent connection failures to occur.

Check out our detailed comparison of all 3, PPTP, L2TP and OpenVPN

proxy

most businesses, schools and universities use a proxy server. All computers must go through that server before accessing information on the Internet.

Router

It works in a manner similar to a mail sorting room. The letters arrive in the mail room, the system checks your code / postal zip, then the factor delivers your mail. A router will take the information that comes with the broadband signal via a modem, monitor, and then delivers it to your computer.

One factor will all mail sorted in their van and deliver to each household or business in the most effective and quickest way. Just like a router. He will choose the best route for the data packet so that you receive the information quickly. If you use multiple computers at home, you can use a VPN router should connect all the internet

SMTP -. . Simple mail transfer protocol

Protocol Simple mail transfer (SMTP) is the protocol used to send emails over the Internet. HMA! requires SMTP addresses be whitelisted to enable you to send emails.

VPN (Virtual Private Network)

Of course, we can not simply ignore this explanation of our VPN glossary! A VPN is a secure Internet connection between your ISP and our ISP. Everything you do online is "encrypted" and essentially anonymous; anyone trying to penetrate your Internet connection to steal sensitive data (eg on public Wi-Fi networks), will not be able to because your web traffic is hidden.

Web sites you visit, usernames and passwords used to log on to websites, people who you talk to online and the files you download and share will be out of seen by others who try to monitor your online use and potentially steal sensitive information from you. Not only your online traffic anonymised, your online identity as an "IP address" is also hidden. Your IP address is essentially your "online footprint" and identification with the world online.

Your IP address can tell people and websites that your physical location and which ISP you use.

VPN software

to connect to one of our many HMA! VPN servers, you can use our VPN software (to see all methods and devices supported, please see our connection Instructions index page)

VPN connection speed

With HMA! Pro VPN speeds of your Internet connection should not be greatly affected. Of course, it depends on several factors such as server load, distance from the server, speeds your ISP, etc. We recommend you to use our integrated speed test to know which VPN server will give you the best rates.

VPS (Virtual Private Server)

a virtual private server (VPS) is one of many virtual machines running on a single computer. They are often used by Internet hosting services.

Web Proxy

A proxy transmits your web page requests to the Internet on your behalf. It functions primarily as an intermediary. It asks the web pages you want, using its own IP address and sends to your browser. For more information on our Web Proxy.

What is a protocol?

If you happen to find yourself having lunch with the Queen of England (as I did last week, she cucumber sandwiches decent, but uses too much butter), a common set of rules and instructions must be followed. When computers communicate with each other, it is the same. A set of communication rules is called a protocol

Just as we communicate with each other in different ways, and for how computers communicate with each other -. There are many different protocols, such as HTTP and FTP and SSL.

Hopefully this VPN glossary has helped you understand some of the commonly used phrases used in the world and VPN Internet security.

If there are terms used in the VPN in the world you want to tell us, let us know and we will add to our VPN glossary.
