Opera bought SurfEasy last year and beginning to integrate the VPN in their Web browser. To be more specific, Opera is included SurfEasy proxy in the browser. Unlike a VPN, the proxy encrypts the traffic that flows through the Opera Web browser. It will not encrypt traffic from other applications or router. Although Opera is the first browser to include an integrated VPN Proxy Service /. This is a positive step for those who want to protect your privacy online and unlock geo-resitrctions.
There are no speed or traffic limits to the new Opera VPN service (proxy). The only restriction is that the traffic through other applications that Opera does not go through the encrypted tunnel. This means that if you want to run Skpye, e-mail or customer favorite in private torrent, you'll still need a VPN third to do so. That still leaves you to protect your privacy and unlock content in the Opera browser. Let's take a look at the 30-second video Opera put together to present their new VPN functionality.
The Opera VPN is simple. To configure it, you just go to the settings and click on a check box " Enable VPN " as shown in the image below. This will encrypt all traffic through the browser. You can disable the VPN within the parameters or the browser address bar. There is a combo box just left of the address bar that allows you to easily enable or disable the VPN function.
Once the VPN is enabled, you can use Opera to visit your favorite websites. The VPN currently supports three locations - Canada, Germany and the United States . The location of the server you connect to matter much in terms of protection of privacy. Your browser traffic will be encrypted regardless of region you connect through. For the best performance, I recommend connecting to the location of the nearest server.
The VPN locations are very important for those who want to access content in other countries. For example, say you are the United States and intends to spend some time in Spain. You do not want to miss out on all the comforts of home. Once you get to Spain you realize that your selection of content to services like Netflix are quite different from what they were at home. Services like Hulu are not even available from Spain. This is where the Opera VPN sites come in. You can connect to their VPN to the US to see the American Library Netflix, Hulu, and more. The same is true for services and streaming channels in Canada and Germany.
Test of the new Opera VPN service (Proxy)
Now that you know how to configure the VPN in Opera we'll take a moment to examine our hands on experience with the service. As you can see below we connected to YouTube and fired up The Magnificent Seven trailer while connected to Opera (SurfEasy) VPN. The screenshot also shows the VPN drop-down list with the available server locations. You can easily switch the VPN on and off. You can also switch between VPN servers in the United States, Canada and Germany directly from the web browser.
We were able to broadcast The Magnificent Seven trailer without any problems. The video ran full screen without buffering. Netflix was our next test as they took a firm stand against the VPN services and SmartDNS lately. We were encouraged to see that Netflix was not blocked by Opera VPN. We could see a video without the dreaded proxy message. The picture was not perfect. It was a bit pixelated, but compared to not having access to Netflix image was fine.
In addition to the new VPN, the Opera browser has built other related privacy features. The ad blocker will help you save bandwidth and browsing the web up to three times faster. You can also send a " Do Not Track " request to sites that support it. This is a good option, but there are many sites that ignore the setting. The incognito will delete your Internet history when you close the session. There is no substitute for good VPN. You always want to enable VPN to encrypt your traffic.
The new Opera VPN functionality is available in the publication of a developer. They do not seem to restrict access to the release. You can learn more about it and download the alpha version directly from Opera site. As an alpha you might expect some bugs along the way. We noticed that when the VPN is enabled, it may be time to set up websites. Our speed tests and video streaming was good, but the content on sites like news.com took a long time to load. Test the new Opera VPN for you and let us know what you think -. @VPNFan
