many users were left very frustrated on Christmas day as both Xbox live and PlayStation Network Sony were targeted by a group of assailants and the two services have decreased throughout the day. The children open their new consoles were left disappointed when they tried unsuccessfully to connect to the Internet when hackers take down Xbox Live and PSN.
The hacker group Lizard Squad has since claimed responsibility for the hour after a DDoS attack caused so entire networks to go down, leaving millions unable to use their consoles online. A DDoS attack, a denial-of-service attack, overloading a website with requests resulting in too much to handle causing the site to go down.
Unfortunately, with this kind of attack, there is no way to prevent attacks of this nature, since it is technically not a hack, a DDoS is simply a system overload, something Sony or Microsoft can not prepare or prevent. The Lizard Squad has not revealed their motivations for failover services, but allegedly by intervention Upload Mega founder Kim Dotcom, was able to convince Lizard Squad to stop attacks by providing good bonus Mega services.
Hopefully by the time you read this, both the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Microsoft will both online. For all those who were excited to get new consoles at Christmas, and left him unable to play, will finally be able to connect online.
