Concerns about the safety of new TouchID Apple -

Just days after the launch of the new Apple fingerprint scanner, "serious concerns have raised by both a wellness-known hacker group and a leading US senator who question the safety of this new TouchID biometric technology.

Senator Al Franken has written an open letter to Apple, raising a number of questions on the issues, including the legality of data storage of fingerprints of customers, the strength of the security systems in place to protect such data, and if it would be possible for the encrypted data to be stolen, and converted into an image used by hackers and fraud.

Senator, who is also chairman of the Judiciary Subcommittee of the Senate on privacy, technology and the law, gave Apple executive Tim Cook one month to respond, but it looks like he will not be waiting too long to know how safe point that data is. There is already a website entitled 'istouchidhackedyet.com' which offers various rewards to the first group or individual to confirm their fears about the use of biometric data - and it may even already be a winner. Chaos Computer Club claims to have already hacked the system, viewing a video on YouTube documenting their exploits just a day after the release of the new phone. The video has not been verified by third parties, but suggests a fingerprint replicated, created from a sheet of latex, successfully fooling the scanner of the iPad.

Writing for Forbes, Joseph Steinberg questioned the veracity of the claim, noting that, in theory at least, the method used must not have been able to confuse the 3D scanner Apple. However, it also notes that "systems are not always implemented exactly as planned, and there are sometimes people exploitable vulnerabilities can be a strong incentive to find." Given the many rewards already offered online the first person to break the system, if the Chaos Computer Club has yet, you can always bet that it will not be long before someone else.
