Google and Microsoft might be rivals in terms most things, but the two companies have recently joined forces to lobby the US government to give companies the right to publish information requests from the secret services. Putting aside their differences, Google and Microsoft are pursuing a lawsuit petitioned the government to allow them to publish statistics concerning secret surveillance requests against customers who use their services.
The Obama administration has already confirmed that it will begin the release of a limited amount of statistics, including the total number of security requests that were issued to customer data over the last 12 months. It was also confirmed that these data will be published each year for the foreseeable future, Google and Microsoft say this is not enough. The two companies are looking for the right to publish much more detailed statistics. The US government's companies in federal court in June, but has already requested six extensions in just two months. Google and Microsoft insist they simply will not agree with all the other delays.
Microsoft's General Counsel Brad Smith wrote on the company blog, "We are both concerned about the continuing refusal of the Government to allow us to publish sufficient data regarding Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act ( FISA) commands ... we believe it is essential to publish information which clearly shows the number of national security requests for the content of the user, such as the text of an email. We believe it is possible to publish these figures in a way that avoids endangering safety. "
Chief Legal Officer David Drummond Google took the same position as Smith in a letter to the Attorney General and the FBI. "We ... ask you to help make it possible for Google to publish our report Transparency overall numbers of requests for national security, including FISA disclosures in terms of number we receive and their scope.
With these two Internet giants combination with the name of information disclosure rights, it seems that the US government has a serious fight on its hands.
