Cyber crime, it seems, is somewhat in vogue at this time, with a number of recent high-profile attacks on US companies have sponsored the Chinese state. China's interest in these activities are not entirely clear, but could, as The Economist suggests, come from a desire to gather valuable information on industrial technologies that are part of the tech-gap between the two largest economies in the world.
However, all threats to US and UK companies come from abroad, and other cyber attacks in the US were more ambiguous in their origins and objectives, elements of evidence suggesting that the rings of organized crime could be responsible - as with most activities have carried out by criminal organizations, the probable motivation is money.
