GreatFire, an organization set up to fight against the Great wall of China, hopes to end the hypocrisy of companies and freedom of expression in China. As GreatFire activists are urging Western companies to end China censorship, they accuse companies like Apple for their alleged hypocrisy regarding censorship in China. While companies like Apple still refer to China when talking about online freedom and struggling with Western governments.
Hypocrisy claimed by GreatFire, is that most Western societies, even if they stand up for freedom of expression and the fight against censorship, they continue to cooperate with the Chinese government. Of course, the power of making China holds, and the rise of the middle class that continues to benefit companies like Apple.
Speaking at a conference in London, a co-founder of GreatFire goes on to claim that these companies do not support their actions, but rather just go with the Chinese government for their own personal monetary gain . Going by the pseudonym Charlie Smith, because of the constant threat of its safety by the Chinese government. But it is not going to praise the efforts of other companies that have taken steps against the censorship imposed by the control of the Chinese government. Companies such as Wikipedia, GitHub and even Google have been recommended to take firm action. Google actually left the country in 2010 over refusing to censor Google search results, ending in Google fired outside Mainland China.
But the struggle against censorship is a long battle that does not look like it would end soon. With China becoming more powerful economically, many companies will flock to them for huge gains in manufacturing and trade. Of course, this means that companies have much more to lose if they were to cease business with China, or simply oppose their position of censure.
