China hit by "greatest ever" - cyber attack

China was hit by its largest ever cyber attack, causing several websites with a name domain ".cn" to be taken offline for several hours.

the distributed denial of service (DDoS) started at 2 am local time on Sunday before becoming stricter about 4am morning. information about the attack was published on (CNNIC) information Centre website of China's Internet, and apologize to all affected users. CNNIC also promised to "enhance the service capabilities" the network that is responsible for the areas concerned.

CNNIC said they can not be certain of the groups responsible for the attack, but the DDoS method is commonly used by many hacktivists worldwide. It works by flood websites with excessive traffic to disrupt their normal functioning.

Although DDoS and other hacking attacks are not particularly new in China, the country is often subject to hacking accusations of other nations, especially the US. A recent survey The New York Times alleged that Chinese hackers had targeted their systems repeatedly over a period of four months -. A charge the Chinese Foreign Ministry described as "baseless"

The ease with which websites appear to have been disturbed surprised some independent spectators, Matthew Aid, an independent analyst, commenting that, " If all websites ending with .cn can be taken by nothing more sophisticated than a typical denial of service attack, the Chinese Internet system is more vulnerable than we thought previously. It is clear that Chinese cyber defenses are not what they should be. " It is certainly an interesting revelation given the number of US accusations rely on the extreme sophistication of the Chinese government hacking abilities.

Use of the Internet comes with an inherent risk of attacks, but there are methods people can use to help protect the data stored on their personal devices, such as a VPN service. A VPN allows your computer an extra layer of security when online, helping to ensure that all malicious external forces are prevented from intercepting the information.
