Spambot arrest underscores the need for online security -

third Botnet spam email in the world, a system that was responsible for a considerable proportion of the world unjustified email advertisements, has finally closing last month, highlighting the need for greater online security in an age of increasingly digital.

The botnet, known in the world of piracy as "Grum", was taken down in two stages by the Dutch authorities, who were able to locate the servers of several "command and control" centers with the help of the California security firm FireEye Malware Intelligence. The servers were used to control a large amount of "zombie" computers, which then pushed millions of spam emails to users worldwide over a period of several years.

The second stage of the operation was to convince Internet service providers in Panama, Russia and Ukraine to close the main server of the botnet. This action was taken after considerable collective effort of several anti-spam organizations, cooperating to destroy a system that has been said to be responsible for 33% of the global total number of spam messages over four years.

Botnets are created by organized criminal gangs that distribute malware to unprotected computer systems, taking advantage of poor online security has become so commonplace in this day and age. Once infected, computers become "zombies", obeying the instructions of a server controlled by the gang without the knowledge of the owner. The criminals then use an army of zombies to send millions - or even billions -. spam emails each day, generating millions of dollars in advertising revenue, either by sending links to legitimate or fraudulent websites

with a growing number of Internet users connect to the World Wide Web on vulnerable wireless hotspots, the risk of being infected by malware Grum style has never been higher. However, users can protect themselves against similar threats by purchasing the reliable VPN service department, enabling them to protect themselves online, even on public WiFi connections. A VPN ensures that the web traffic of a user is encrypted, reducing the ability to broadcast inadvertently passwords to other users on the same network.

While international authorities will continue to remain vigilant, so most of us have these basic steps to secure our own machines, we could significantly reduce the effectiveness of Grum botnets style in the future .
