Our view on the British bill proposed Internet safety. -

There are two days the British Prime Minister David Cameron has proposed a new law to impose default Internet filtering for adults and sensitive issues. This legislation would require people to "opt-out" of these Internet filters by default rather than make an informed choice about what they would like to filter into place.

Here in Hide My Ass! We truly believe that the Internet should not be censored and attempts to supposedly "inappropriate content" inaccessible, freedom of expression will be seriously compromised. Automated Internet filtering software is generally more restrictive and therefore ineffective. For example, the use of this filtering software in an attempt to censor pornography, could easily lead to sex or tips on education sexually transmitted diseases materials blocked. We fully support anyone who wants to control the Internet in their own home - but a government sponsored "one-size-fits-all" filter is bound to limit the options for parents who want to make use of intelligent filters, because it will become completely unviable for private companies to develop and maintain these products.

Our biggest concern with the proposals is the lack of information about what happens to the list of people who opt-out of the filter? It is inevitable that the list of those who opt out will be created. Did the police or GCHQ access to this list? How this list will be secured and how privacy will be protected? With the growing prevalence of large-scale data mining - what safeguards are in place to prevent commercial ISPs use the data

These questions were left unanswered or even worse, recklessly. Even with the best intentions, more detail is needed to understand why the government wants to place users online on the official lists and go against the spirit of the open Internet.

Without answers to these questions, it is not appropriate that these proposals become law -. privacy and freedoms of Internet users is at stake
