online malware is usually associated with smaller websites, email phishing and suspicious links posted on social networks, but recent infection two US major sites has highlighted the dangers of letting your guard down on the web, even during the visit of the most famous pages.

According to Web Threats AVG Research Team, two of the most recent victims of cyber crime sophisticated campaigns are trusted household names whose sites are visited by millions of users around the world every day - online and MSN news giant US broadcaster NBC.

A page on MSN Italy was targeted by malicious code which then infected visitors' machines and claimed that their PCs had been locked by the US Department of Justice. This 'ransomware' generated message acknowledging the user to download a number of illegal files, before inviting them to pay a "fine" to regain control of their system. To their surprise, the users who made the payment observed that the message is not authentic, and that the only way to correctly regain control of their computers was to initiate a clean start to try and remove malware.

In a similar attack on the NBC site, an exploit kit was used to target site visitors by installing the Citadel Trojan increasingly common on their computers. The malware - which has about 300 variants - is programmed to steal sensitive information, including bank details and passwords
