Passenger Name Record system threatens privacy -

Passenger Name Record (PNR) is a recently approved by European lawmakers system that adds another nail in the coffin of rape the fundamental rights of individuals to privacy.

civil liberties, justice of the European Parliament and Home Affairs Committee (LIBE) recently approved passenger regime Name Record which will make mandatory for airlines, tour and travel agencies also operators to collect and store information such as an email address passengers, IP address (if the ticket was bought online), and credit card details of those flying in or out of the EU to identify suspicious activities. The Passenger Name Record system will not include passengers flying between the EU Member States - although for now

Some EU countries, there including the United Kingdom, already have the Passenger Name Record system in operation.

With governments worldwide fight against terrorism and other serious crimes, the EU member states see the PNR system as an essential measure to prevent criminal and terrorist activities, however, there are a number of privacy with the passenger name record system. Again, we see another mass surveillance measure putting all suspicious passengers, and in addition, all personal and confidential information will be available for security officials to investigate.

While MPs say that the PNR regime could be used "only for the purposes of prevention, detection, investigation and prosecution of terrorist offenses and certain types of crime transnational ", a number of privacy organizations fear that the regime has gone too far.

An earlier proposal in 2011 to implement the NRP was rejected because of the violation of fundamental rights to privacy, but with the terrorist attacks in Paris earlier this year, the member states EU pushed for the passenger name record system must be executed as soon as possible.

Speaking to The Register German politician and MEP Jan Philipp Albrecht said the passenger name record system has taken a step too far; "The impudence with which some center-left center-right deputies and disregarded the ECJ case law and voted in favor of unjustified mass surveillance of all air passengers is alarming," he added that voting in favor of the PNR regime "means that all air passengers in the EU will be placed under general suspicion and considered their personal details"

passenger data will initially be stored for 30 days, after which the information is "hidden" -. meaning that only a handful of officials authorized to process data (Passenger Information Units), will have access to a maximum of five years. After five years, the data will be erased permanently, unless "the competent authorities use to specific investigations or prosecutions."

Fight against terrorism and serious crime is to be applauded, but the new endangered PNR system not only provides privacy and violates fundamental rights, it also places all suspicious passengers, and how can air -passagers are confident that their sensitive information is 100% safe and will not be used for other purposes?

talks between member states will take place before the plan becomes law.
