Facebook is the latest social networking service to find themselves attacked by pirates, following the massive security breach of Twitter ago few weeks in which 250,000 user details were stolen.
Facebook said it had been the target of a "sophisticated attack" which occurred when employees connected to the website of a developer who had been affected by malware, leaving him free settle on the laptops used to access it - laptops that the company insists are fully updated and running updated anti-virus software. Facebook says it has discovered the breach last month and he is confident no user data was compromised, citing a zero-day flaw in the Java software as a likely cause.
The California company manages a White Hat plan offering a monetary reward to anyone who manages to find a security bug Facebook so it is somewhat surprising that hackers may not opt for this route to square. Maybe not the most savvy pirates around. Facebook did not take lightly this attack and is in contact with the police, as well as the realization of a large-scale survey. It is not yet known if Facebook was targeted by the same group that attacked Twitter, but the company claims that they are not the only ones being targeted - simply the first to be identified - it seems quite likely that the culprits are part of the same group.
was a particularly interesting commentator blogger and author Jeff Jarvis, who appeared on BBC News and condemned the program to whip a "techno panic" about the hack. Jarvis was probably a point, since no user data was actually compromised, and the attack hit a handful of employees. Anyway, Facebook is working closely with police and security teams to other online businesses so that they can learn to avoid this happening again in the future.
Concerns about online security and privacy are never as widespread, and if you share these concerns then maybe it's worth investing in a VPN service. Using a VPN service can help mask your identity and adds an extra layer of protection between you and all the sneaky pirates there.
