Wiretapping Why today is quite unlike yesterday -

wiretapping expanded grotesquely legislators without being aware, right under the law requiring the apparent ability to wiretap conversations online. What nobody talks about it is if you wiretap conversations online, you wiretap a huge amount of other activities, too -. Activities that were never wiretappable

You often hear law enforcement complain that they have lost the ability to wiretap in the digital world, and need the ability "equivalent" wiretap they had on the old analogue telephone network.

This is an outrageously misleading application, not to mention an outright lie. Yet politicians are buying it, lock, stock, and barrel.

When your phonecall was bugged in the analog world, conversations with other people could be recorded and used against you. This was the start and end thereof.

When your digital traffic is tapped, more or less all thought you do is to be intercepted and recorded. This is so scary, it's not even funny. This is far from the ability to simply eavesdrop -. It goes orders of magnitude beyond that level of invasion

There has never been possible wiretap what newspapers you read, what newspaper articles, for how time, and in what order.

it was never possible to wiretap the information you look in a library, in what order, and what you think about looking inbetween.

it was never possible to wiretap you looking at photos of your friends.

it was never possible wiretapping virtually every step you take, as you take around the city, mapping your movements in real time - and make a note of the people you meet too - recording all to be used against you at any time in the future, perhaps decades from now.

And this grotesque expansion of surveillance is fully passed without debate, that law enforcement was able to frame as "a technical adaptation to modern means of communication."

it shows the danger of legislators offline babies, who frankly have no idea about how the world works today in a deep enough level of detail to understand the ramifications of the laws they make.

the list in many countries, letters and diaries have a special status when law enforcement conducting search warrants. - to enter, you must have a very serious crime at hand . But computers and smartphones are entered and lose again today. They are considered as working tools, no more private than a garage key, by the completely obsolete legislation - where protection of computers and phones should have at least the same as a newspaper or a collection of personal letters, and probably much more than that, seeing how we documenting much of our personal lives today.

This is obviously not the equivalent of wiretaps analog phonecalls. This is the equivalent of having someone look over the shoulders of the people, in their private home and wherever they go on, and record everything they do in the case where it can be used against them decades from now.

The future grows darker, and it is us who understand the technology to make a difference.

Meanwhile, your private life is your own responsibility.
