Privacy and electric monk -

Many believe several contradictory things about private life. If we can understand why this is, we could solve a lot of problems with the governments lack of respect for fundamental civil liberties, and even worse, go out with her.

The writer Douglas Adams is best known for its Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy trilogy, with five books in it. However, he wrote some other series as well, and in one of them, Dirk Gently Holistic Detective Agency, there is a very special character known as Electric Monk .

The idea of an electric monk was simple. Like a VCR would record TV shows for you so you would not need to be there to see exactly the time they broadcast, an electric monk could watch all that garbage for you and believing every word it, so you can go about your daily life instead. He could believe in all the great religions of the world together and could hold eight completely contradictory ideas at the same time head without malfunction symptoms.

This is where general statements today on the public's privacy comes in. You can easily hear all these sentences of one and the same person in the uninterrupted period of five minutes while discussing privacy:

  • "What the Stasi. did was horrible, open people's letters and read "
  • " I do not mind the NSA / GCHQ / FRA read my stuff, I've done nothing wrong, I have nothing to hide. "
  • " It is horrible how they make examples of people who did absolutely nothing wrong. "
  • " I'm not interesting, they only care about my phonecalls anyway. "
  • " People have a right to privacy. It is in the Constitution. "
  • " Just because the government is reading the correspondence of all people does not make us East Germany. (Just look here on the map, it is clear that we are not. We are here and they were there.) "

Although this is true stereotyped, it is also the points you would tend to hear. you will notice that they are completely, one hundred percent, contradictory and irreconcilable. There is an important cognitive disconnection that allows people to assert completely contradictory points in the context of privacy without even realizing they are doing.

so what do we do about it?

We talk. We continue to talk. the best way to make people think a subject is simply to talk, bringing about the first time line center to another. When contradictions are reported, some people will simply reject offhand. But many will really start to wonder why they believe contradictory things.

At this time, the public perception of privacy is as contradictory as powdered water. We must work together to change this situation.

Privacy remains your own responsibility.
