The Federal Communications Commission of the United States has created an online tool to provide users with smartphones orientation against the smartphone security threats. Their line Smartphone Security Checker allows Android phone users, Apple iOS, BlackBerry and Windows with specific advice ten per device.

The FCC has worked with other government agencies, including the US Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Trade Commission to create the plan. Online security experts such as McAfee, Sophos and Symantec, along with manufacturers like BlackBerry were also consulted. They hope that the tool will contribute to the protection of personal data of users on mobile phones, especially if a device is infected with malware, but if it is lost or stolen. The online security tool asks users to select the operating system of their device and then offers ten suggested actions. Many of these actions are repeated in each device, specific guidance designed for specific operating systems are also provided.
